I invite you to read Pox: An American History by Michael Willrich. I’m reading it now. It’s one perspective on the American way in which people deal with epidemic disease as seen through the experience of the smallpox epidemics at the beginning of the 1900s. This was very much pre-New Deal, and federal intervention wasn’t nearly the thing it is today, but a lot of the principles brought up today were on display back then. States and localities were left to deal with their local outbreaks far more even than today, but I think we still see the legacy of the American state-focused approach to government reflected in the current epidemic.

The idea with concepts like “liberty” and “freedom” is that you should be able to do as you please , as long as you don ’t hurt other people . The problem I have with so-called “American individualism” is that it is often used an excuse to do whatever you please regardless of who it hurts . See - refusing to wear facemasks, storming government buildings to reopen Applebees, etc.

From reading my history, I honestly believe the current BUT WHAT ABOUT MAH FREEDOM attitude is a bizarro over-amplified version of American individualism, that’s been blown way out of proportion by years of political polarization and right-wing propaganda masquerading as “news.” The trend has been going on since roughly the beginning of the Reagan administration and has only gotten worse over time.

It’s amazing how many societal indicators veered off in the wrong direction right around the time Reagan took office.

That is also a good choice. I may take that one down and re-read it.

That is no coincidence.
If you haven’t already, look into Movement Conservatism. It’s utterly terrifying.

They’ve almost completely won too. They’ve basically taken over the Democrats along with the Republicans. Yet the more successful they are the more rabid they get.

Yup. I’m about as enthused to vote for Biden as I am at the prospect of having someone kick me in the wedding veg, but anything other than Biden winning means this country is over for good.
